Weekend Tidbits
Starting the weekend off right:

Over the past several years, the maintenance needs on my motorcycle have built up to the point that the bike will cost more to repair than it's worth. Due to the increasing problems with the bike, I didn't get to ride very much two summers ago, and not at all last summer. So by the time this spring rolled around, I'd been pining for an opportunity for quite a while. Thankfully, [info]mckitterick took pity on me, and was generous enough to let me borrow his bike. I picked it up last Tuesday, and though my schedule hasn't allowed me to really take advantage of it yet, I have taken it out for at least a 5 or 10 minutes each evening since. But by this evening, I was tired of the tease of having a working bike in the driveway, and I decided to take it out for a real ride. I took a ride down the farmers turnpike, and came back on 24/40 -- I haven't ridden that route in quite some time. The mist was cool and refreshing, and there was little or no traffic -- it was the perfect way to start the holiday weekend. (Thanks, [info]mckitterick!)

I have a weird family:

A couple days ago, [info]kijjohnson mentioned that she had seen my brother (who lives with me) in her neighborhood looking for houses. While Isaac hadn't told me that he was going to move out, I wasn't exactly surprised -- he's always played his cards pretty close to the vest. I made a mental note to ask what the story was the next time I saw him. As it turns out, I didn't have to: When we all got together for my mom's birthday on Wednesday, I overheard him talking to another family member, and one of them casually mentioned the fact that he's now engaged -- which was also news to me. Apparently he and his (now) fiance' have been engaged for a couple of weeks, and didn't bother to tell anyone! Needless to say, I was a little shocked -- I know Isaac can keep to himself, but damn! I live with the boy (and his fiance' may as well be a room-mate...) and they never even mentioned it!

I really like his fiance', and am very happy for him -- they make a great couple, and I look forward to having Tabitha be a part of the family. ([info]chernobylred is just glad that we'll have the house to ourselves again. ;) )

All in all, I've had a pretty good time of it lately -- My brother's engaged to a great girl, and I can celebrate by going for rides! ;)

What [info]0verdrive failed to mention is this just makes the two of us look really bad. 7 years? Who's counting? His folks, that's who. Cripes.

Our 'bean friends in Eugene, OR, just got married... after some 20-odd years together. Of course, they couldn't do it legally before, but that's got to be a record. Oh, wait, and George and Pam (Zebrowski and Sargent) are going on 12 years, I think. Don't believe in getting the gov't involved in their marriage!

Nope, actually some friends of mine keep pretty close tabs on this because if they become married he looses all sorts of disability benefits

There are four requirements for a valid common law marriage. Just living together isn't enough to validate a common law marriage:
1)You must live together.
2)You must present yourselves to others as a married couple. Some ways of doing this are by using the same last name, referring to one another as husband or wife, and filing a joint tax return.
3)Although not defined, you have to be together for a significant period of time.
4)You must intend to be married

Specifially for Kansas
For a man and woman to form a common-law marriage, they must: (1) have the mental capacity to marry; (2) agree to be married at the present time; and (3) represent to the public that they are married.

My bike's toast, too, so I know how you feel in the deprivation...but now I'm jealous.

It's been nice to have a spare that I can lend, but a scooter is all you really need in a town of this size.

So it was in the paper? Yeah, we missed that one, too.

I can't wait to not have to use my bathrobe when I go from shower to dressing room. Hurrah!
