Driving Excitement
I had my brakes replaced on my car yesterday, and when I picked up the car I noticed that they felt a little strange. But the car was stopping, and I didn't hear any odd noises, so I chalked it up to different brake pads, and figured that I'd get used to them.

Then this morning I took the exit ramp off I-435, and continued at a fairly fast speed since I was trying to make the light at the end of the ramp. But when I realized that I wasn't going to make it in time, I stopped. Or rather, I tried to stop. Instead of stopping, the car just gradually slowed down -- but not quickly enough for the oncoming intersection. Even with the brakes pressed all the way to the floor, I was still coming up on the intersection a little too fast for comfort. Thankfully, there wasn't much traffic, and I was able to swerve into the right-hand lane, and use the momentum I still had to make a right turn, avoiding cars in the process.

But I'm not too pleased with the guys at Midas right now. I think I'll take it to a Midas here in town before I attempt the drive back into Lawrence...

'Scuse me, you couldn't call to tell me this? I had to read about it in LJ? Jeebus, man! What're trying to do to me?

I had a meeting! I had just enough time to jot this down before I wasted the next 3 hours of my life in a(nother) pointless meeting...

Very glad to hear it turned out well enough, and that you had a clear right lane to use. Now you see why I say "be safe" so often?

Yeah, I was glad with how it turned out too, considering my alternatives. ;)

(And I was being safe!)

Yes, I'm glad I wasn't listening to *your* traffic report on the radio this morning driving into work. I'm glad I wasn't listening to mine either (except that mine would have been totally my fault).

I've had a bad experience with Midas and brakes as well. *Bah* to corporate car repair!

Yeah, I would not have been happy had I wrecked my car this morning.

As for *Bah* to corporate car repair!: I'm all for doing the job yourself -- except that as a commuter, I don't have the time to have a car out of service for more than a day. And I know that (because I'm not a professional, with all the necessary tools and replacement parts on-hand) things will occasionally happen that delay the job. (No offense to [info]mckitterick, but look how long it took to replace the brakes on the Focus -- I can't afford that much down-time with the Maxima.)

So I chose Midas because they have a lifetime warranty on their brakes.
(I didn't consider that the lifetime of the car may be significantly reduced...)

Well, buddy o'mine, you have a point. (Those not in-the-know: I swapped out the entire front brakes on our car -- pads, hardware, and rotors -- a few weeks ago. Took several hours of labor plus several days spread over a couple of weeks due to needing to buy some specific tools.) But consider that the car stops as it should, and it cost me a grand total of $90 or so for pads, hardware, rotors, and tools. So there, smarty-pants!

I'd have helped, y'know, and you do have a cycle on which to commute.

By the way, eeeek! REALLY glad you're ok. I had a 1950 Chevy that did that regularly, so I could plan for it. But it wouldn't have carried much momentum even at the bottom of an on-ramp, if you get my meaning.

I suspect they didn't bleed the fluid, dumb-bunnies! Did pumping the brake pedal help? Usually does, FYI to y'all out there now worried about your own brakes.

It wasn't an accusation -- I'm just stating that I may have needed to buy specific tools also! And I know that you saved a considerable amount more than I did. But it took approximately 2 weeks longer than I could afford.

(It's true that I could commute on the bike. But I prefer riding for pleasure, and riding during rush-hour is hardly pleasurable. By the time I get to work via motorcycle, I'm usually on-edge from being overly alert for stupid drivers.)

Well, I was thinking that in my experience smaller, locally owned mechanics have always done a much better job on repairing my car than corporate mechanic places. I'll do a few things on my car myself, but replacing the brakes isn't one of them.

True, and I'll take my car to a local mechanic for any engine work that needs to be done. But most local mechanics can't offer lifetime brakes, which is why I considered Midas in the first place...

Apparently, Midas can afford to offer lifetime brakes by shortening the lifetime of the car (and the owner).

Compared to overhauling an engine, brakes ARE small jobs! But you're right -- individually owned joynts are almost always better than the chain stores.

Ditto on the bad experience with Midas; I won't take my car back there. And it happened while I was commuting too. Hmm... wonder if there's a plot?

My advice is not to use Midas or Meineke, as I've used them both and have had to take my car back multiple times in order to get them to fix it right.

There's a problem that I have currently, and if it's because of the brake job, you can bet that Midas is going to be hearing from me about the cost of repairs, brother.

(FWIW, I've been using En-Tire car care on 31st (next to the post office) and have so far been very pleased.) They're open 7am - 7pm. Those are hours I can handle as a single girl.

Glad to hear you weren't killed.

Two things:

Glad you are still alive... I'm just getting to know you, and to the process would be a shame.

More motocycle soon? p-p-p-p-please?

A
